A Brief History of Picture Framing and the Practice of Conservation Framing
Michael Whitby, Frames Conservator at the Imperial War Museum, will explore the development of picture framing and its functions in embellishing, displaying and protecting works of art. The talk will cover a range of frame styles, from early icon paintings to modern box frames and artists’ frames, as well as the development of framing for works of art on paper and photographs.
Michael will also introduce the principles and practice of conservation framing, including its aims, methodology, techniques and materials, with particular reference to reversible mounting and the appropriate materials for framing photographs and works on paper. Samples and demonstrations will illustrate the conservation framing process.
